Emoji’s on an Apple iOS Device: Rita’s iDevice Advice for April 17, 2023
Emoji’s, or Pictograms, Logograms, Ideograms, and Smileys. These are used in electronic messages and webpages. The Emoji‘s primary function is to fill in emotional cues otherwise missing from typed conversation.
An Emoji is a small digital image or icon use to express an idea or emotion.
Some examples of Emoji‘s are: 😎 🐱 🍎
VoiceOver allows those of us who are blind to have full access to Emoji’s.
When you are in any editable text field on an Apple iOS Device, you can find the wide variety of Emoji’s from activating the Emoji icon on the on screen keyboard. The Emoji button is located in the far bottom left corner when the on screen keyboard is visible.
When you activate the Emoji button, you will encounter a series of tabs at the bottom of your screen. Such as Frequently Used Category, Smileys and People Category, Animals and Nature Category, Food and DrinkCategory, Activity Category, Travel and Places Category, Objects Category, Symbols Category, Flags Category, etc.
Also, there is a very handy “Search” feature available, once you open the Emoji keyboard. The Search is located just past the Send Button above Emoji’s that are currently showing. If you tap on the Search within the Emoji keyboard showing, you can type the name of an image that you want: such as, “heart”. Several Emoji’s matching “heart” will appear: such as red heart, smiling face with hearts, blue heart, heart with arrow through it, etc. You can tap on that Emoji that you want and it will autofill in the text area of the Edit field. The search is convenient because there is a plethora of Emojis to choose from and sometimes it is hard to find the one you want when going through all the categories of Emoji’s.
Further explanation related to searching for emoji’s:
The use of emojis may assist you in expressing emotions.
In any text field where you can open the emoji keyboard, tap the emoji keyboard icon.
You will see a search bar at the top of the emojis. Tap the search bar to begin typing.
If you search for an emoji, such as: “birthday cake,” “party hat”, or “happy,” the emoji keyboard will narrow down the emojis based on your search. VoiceOver is very good at describing emoji’s.
How to get predictive emojis to choose from on your iPhone:
Open the Settings app.
Tap General.
Tap Keyboard.
Make sure that the Predictive toggle is on. (The toggle is green when enabled.) Swipe up to close the Settings app.
Open the Messages app.
Start a new message or tap an existing conversation.
Start typing in the text field, there will be predictive text suggestions under the text box. Suggested emojis appear in the horizontal menu below the text message.
To replace a word with an emoji, tap on the suggested emoji before adding a space after the word.
If you want to follow a word with a suggested emoji, add a space after the word and then tap the emoji.
If you want to add your emojis all at once, type the entire message and then tap the emoji icon in the bottom left of your keyboard.
Some of the words in your text will be highlighted. Those words have emojis associated with them.
Tap any of the highlighted words to replace them with an emoji.
Some words have multiple associated emojis, so when you tap the word, you’ll have several emojis to choose from.
Some of my favorite emoji’s:
