GIF animated images on an iPhone: Rita’s iDevice Advice for April 24, 2023

What does GIF stand for?GIF is an acronym for Graphics Interchange Format. It was developed in the late 1980’s.
The most commonly used GIFs are animated images.

How to get the #images GIF keyboard. There is a GIF keyboard built-in to the Messages app (it’s called #images). There are also third-party options

Note: When running VoiceOver, most of the images are not accessible. When you do a Search, after opening the #images option from the app drawer, the image recognition features built in to VoiceOver attempt to describe the image. Most of these images are “Meme’s”.

There is an app called “AssistEyes” that has accessible GIF’s. You can find out more on the wwwapplevis.com <http://wwwapplevis.com/> website. The AssistEyes app has a free version and a one time purchase option of $4.99.

Send and save GIFs on your iPhone:
With Messages, you can find hundreds of trending GIFs in #images to add to your messages.

Add a GIF from #images
Use #images in the Messages app to find and share GIFs with your contacts. Here's how:
Open Messages, tap and enter a contact or tap an existing conversation.
To search for a specific GIF, tap Find images, then enter a keyword, like birthday.
Tap the GIF to add it to your message.
Tap to send.
GIFs from #images, animate only in the Messages app on Apple devices.

Save a GIF
You can save a GIF that you receive in a message to the Photos app on your iOS device:
Open Messages.
Open the message that has the previously sent GIF, that you want to save.
Tap and hold the GIF, then tap Save.

Note: When you save a GIF to your Photos app, The animated image will go to the “Recents” Album, and it will also be saved to the “Animated” Album, and can be accessed through the list of Albums in your Photos App

You can text a GIF on your iPhone to add expression to your messages.
To text a GIF, you can use either your Messages app's built-in GIF keyboard or a third-party app.

GIFs are a fun and often humorous way to interact via text. A GIF keyboard is automatically built into any iPhone, allowing you to send pictures to convey thoughts or ideas.
For an even greater library of GIFs, users can download third-party apps like GIF keyboard and GIPHY. Just like texting a written message, texting a GIF is easily accomplished through the Messages app
Open Messages and compose a new message or open an existing one
Tap the ‘A’ (Apps) icon to the left of the text field
If #images don’t pop up first, tap the icon with four bubbles in the bottom left corner
Tap on #images to browse, search and choose a GIF.
Here’s a more detailed walkthrough of finding GIFs in Messages:
Once you’ve pulled up the #images GIF app in Messages, you can browse and choose from popular GIFs or use the search bar to find something in particular.
Once you’ve chosen a GIF you can add text to go along with it before sending it.

How to get third-party GIF keyboards
If you’d like to get a third-party GIF keyboard for a wider variety of GIFs, two of the most popular options are GIPHY. and GIF Keyboard. Both are free apps and can be downloaded either through the App Store app or within the iMessage App Store.
In Messages, tap on Store (the + icon) to browse and find third-party apps that can be used within Messages.

Shortcut for a GIF:

In the Shortcuts app, under the gallery section, there is a shortcut with Siri to make a GIF of a “live photo“. You can go to your Photos app, go to the Albums tab, go to the Live Photos, open a specific, live photo, and then say to Siri to create a GIF of this photo.

=====

assistEyes GIF is the first GIF app built specifically for the blind and visually impaired.

Note: This app is several years old, and is available, but it is dated, and I am not sure if it has been updated in some time.

Browse thousands of GIFs by hashtag or search, choose one, and send or copy it via standard iOS share sheet. And of course, they all include descriptive tags that are exposed to VoiceOver. What's more, you can also access the same fully accessible GIF library directly inside the iOS Messages app via the included iMessage app.

Your sighted friends and family will be communicating via visual elements more and more and emoji, stickers, and GIFs are here to stay. I'll do my best to keep making software that helps people like you and I partake in the fun. Check out assistEyes GIF and drop a review or send me an e-mail to let me know what you think.

This app is quite accessible via VoiceOver. It includes a ton of GIFs that have pretty descriptive tags and it can be used via a regular app or as an iMessages app. In both cases, all content, navigation, and buttons are clearly labeled for VO.

The app is fully accessible with VoiceOver and is easy to navigate and use.
