TVI Friend,

I am writing to share some exciting news with you! Thanks to your support, The Vision Institute (TVI) has grown into a strong organization serving South Carolina and parts of North Carolina. Last year, our team worked together to serve thirty-one school entities – public, private, and charter. Additionally, we served 120 adults through our iCanConnect and Independent Living programs.

We are proud of what we have done, but more work is needed. A recent nationwide study revealed that South Carolina has 75,000 people over the age of 65 with visual impairment or blindness. That number is expected to double this decade, so we have begun partnering with other organizations and talking to legislators to address this critical need. Out of this effort, a beautiful partnership was born. The Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired South Carolina (ABVI) is a non-profit organization that has been serving adults in the Charleston area for 87 years. Our partnership with ABVI was awarded a $250,000 grant from the state of South Carolina, which will provide training and technology to enable adults to live safely and independently in their homes and communities.

The grant partnership between TVI and ABVI was so successful that we have decided to merge the two organizations to serve all ages across the state! This news is exciting for both organizations, but ultimately, this decision is monumental for individuals living with vision loss in South Carolina. This merger will have a great impact on services for adults, and the union will also enhance school-based programming through additional resources to recruit nationally and retain top-notch talent.

So, while our “look” and emails will change, rest assured that TVI’s school-based services will continue to thrive and provide high-quality instruction, teachers for the visually impaired, orientation & mobility providers, assistive technology specialists, and braille transcription services. During the month of October, the TVI and ABVI social media pages will give more information about the merger, enable you to hear from team members, learn about programming plans, and read client success stories.

I look forward to the future of services in South Carolina and am grateful for your continued support. If you have any questions about this new step forward, please give us a call or send an email.

Sincerely,
Jeanie
Executive Director
