I spent this morning doing something a lot of people still think blind folks can’t do: I made a completely visual app usable—without a single ounce of sighted help.

The app had a bunch of unlabeled buttons. VoiceOver just said “button, button, button.” Instead of calling in a pair of eyes, I took screenshots, fed them to AI, and asked, “Tell me what these buttons are from left to right.”

Within seconds I had a map of the interface: upload, history, logo, dropdown, Facebook, X, and more. From there I could label what mattered, build my own mental model of the screen, and start using the app like anyone else.

This wasn’t about convenience. It was about independence. AI didn’t replace a human; it removed a barrier that used to require one.

The future of accessibility is collaborative: blind users, smart tools, and apps designed with us in mind from day one. Until that’s the norm, I’ll keep using AI to bend inaccessible software in my favor.
