How to change the Background in an individual text conversation:  Rita’s iDevice advice for April 13, 2026


how to change the background on text messages on an iPhone:
Note:  Whatever background you choose, it will also be visible to the person on the other end.

Note:  If you are using VoiceOver:  when the instructions say "Tap on an item", perform a one finger double tap gesture.

Open Messages, and find the conversation where you want to change the background.
Open that specific Conversation.
Tap the name at the top of the screen.
Tap Backgrounds.
You have several choices for Backgrounds.
Select Photo to choose a photo from your photo library, if you want a specific photo to be the Background on the Text Conversation.
You can also use a pre-set Color, Sky, Water, or Aurora background.
If your iPhone is compatible with Apple Intelligence, you can also select a Playground-generated background. 
Once you select a background category, swipe left and right to cycle through the different options for that category.
When you are satisfied, tap the checkmark to save the background.
Note:  when running VoiceOver, Select the Done button.
Tap the back button to return to the conversation.
You will see the new background in the conversation.  There will be a message in the conversation that you changed the background.
