Live Read, OCR app: Rita’s iDevice advice for March 9, 2026
Live Read helps people with visual impairments read printed text in their daily lives. It uses the camera to detect words and speak them aloud, making reading easier. Live Read turns your camera into a personal reading companion. It instantly finds printed text and speaks it aloud, giving people with visual impairments an easy way to read independently. No setup, no clutter. Read anything around you From mail and books to signs, menus, and labels, Live Read makes everyday reading effortless at home or on the go. Designed for accessibility Every part of Live Read is built for ease of use. Just open the app, point the camera, and it starts reading automatically. Tap anywhere to stop or reset, or swipe to move between lines. Turning on VoiceOver will replace the swipe gestures with buttons. Features • Automatic reading: Text is detected and spoken aloud in real time. • Tap or swipe control: Tap to stop or reset. Swipe left to repeat a line or right to skip ahead a line of text. • Customizable speech: Choose from natural Apple voices and adjust speaking speed. • Works offline: Reads instantly without an internet connection. • Multi-language support: Recognizes printed text in 50+ languages. • Private and secure: Live Read never saves or sends anything you scan. All processing happens instantly and entirely on your device. Disclaimer: Live Read is not a medical device. Text recognition results may not always be accurate or complete. Please use your own judgment and verify information when needed.
Live Read is available on the Apple App Store for iOS/iPadOS devices that support the required camera and on‑device OCR capabilities. It is developed by Ryan Anetsberger and listed as free to download.
In a typical use case, a blind user might open Live Read, point the phone at a piece of mail on a table, and hear the text start reading immediately, then swipe left to repeat a line they missed or right to skip ahead.
Live Read turns the device camera into a reading companion that continuously looks for printed text (mail, books, signs, menus, labels, etc.) and starts reading as soon as text is detected, without extra steps. It’s designed to make quick, ad‑hoc reading tasks easier at home or on the go, similar in spirit to “quick read” modes in other blindness apps.
The app is explicitly designed for accessibility, with a simple interface where you just open, point, and it starts reading automatically. When VoiceOver is enabled, the swipe gestures are replaced with clearly labeled buttons, and the app also supports larger text, dark interface, sufficient contrast, reduced motion, and “differentiate without color” settings.
Automatic real‑time reading: text is recognized and spoken aloud as the camera sees it, with no need to manually capture a photo first.
Offline processing: all OCR and speech run entirely on‑device, so it works without an internet connection and avoids latency.
Customizable speech: uses Apple system voices with adjustable speaking rate so you can match your preferred VoiceOver or TTS settings.
Tap and swipe control: tap to stop or reset; swipe left to repeat the current line or right to move to the next line of text.
