Searching for a specific Contact with in the Contacts App:  Rita’s iDevice advice for March 23, 2026


Contacts are saved alphabetically, by default starting with the last name and then the first name.

Note:  If you are using VoiceOver:  when the instructions say "Tap on an item", perform a one finger double tap gesture.


On your iPhone, open the Contacts app.
If you open to your Contact Lists, tap All Contacts.
There will be a search option at the bottom left corner.  Tap it to search.
Type in the name or phone number of the contact.
Tap the contact when it comes up in the results area of the screen.
You can also search by using the vertical alphabetic scroll bar, which is located on the far right hand edge of the iPhone screen.
Tap a letter to go to that letter, and then drag your finger up and down the alphabet to search.
Note:  When running VoiceOver, Find the vertical Alphabetic scroll bar, and flick with one finger up and down to get to the letter of the alphabet that you want.  Once focus is on the specific letter in the alphabetic scroll area, bring one finger over to the left hand side of the screen, tap the screen to bring the VoiceOver cursor over to the Heading area for the specific alphabetic letter that you chose.


To get to the top of a screen or document quickly, touch the status bar, then double tap with one finger.  This will Scroll to the very top of any page or document, and it works, regardless of whether you use voiceover or not.
