Keith,

You are exactly right. There are wind or mag trainers that you slip the back 
wheel into. I have one set up with a single Trek bike set in it so I can 
pedal to my hearts content and shift through the gears etc. I'm sure others 
will have more technical info.

There are also rollers The bike is not fixed to these and you try to stay in 
the middle. they help you develop a smooth pedal stroke. Again, I hope 
others will chime in on these.
