Joe said, in Response to Lisamaria:
"What is the answer? Tomorrow is a new day.
Greet it, apply the choke, and squeeze until it taps."
Great quote, Joe. Thanks for it--I like that one. I'm sending it to one of
the pastors at my church. He's a 20-year-old 'punk' who's into martial arts,
kickboxing, etc., and was a wrestler in school. So he'd kick my butt pretty
quick, in fact he did when we wrestled a couple weeks ago. I call him a
punk because I'm nearly twice his age, and I only wish I was anywhere near
where he is at his age. So he's still a "punk"--just a punk that I love and
respect. (smile)
We're actually bringing wrestling, martial arts, kickboxing, and
self-defense lessons into our church on Wednesdays and Thursday nights now,
for the kids (www.TheMovementChurch.info). The kids love it. And if any of
them ever think they're tough and have problems with eachother, they can now
bring it into the ring and 'settle it' in respectable fashion (rather than
down at the schoolyard or something), while learning to fight properly too.
Though most seem to be keeping their mouths shut more often, now that they'
ve felt what it's like to actually get hit by another kid. It's rather
humorous. ;-)
No, we're not 'just' teaching the kids to fight, at least not for the sake
of fighting alone. Not hardly. Me personally, I try to keep two things in
mind. Two "bits of advice" you could say. One is the Apostle Paul (or,
'Saint Paul') who said numerous things in the Bible about 'buffeting' and
'beating' his own body into submission. He made his body his slave so that
he could better serve God.
Unfortunately, today, we know far more of a different use of that word,
"buffet."
Now I'm not preaching here. These are simply my own personal reasons I'm
sharing, as to why I continue striving to be better. Here's one specific
verse that says a lot about it, for me:
Philippians 1:20
"I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed,
but will have sufficient courage so that now as always
Christ will be exhalted in my body,
whether by life or by death."
I just think it's better to take care of the body God gave us, or 'loaned
us.' Though I'm damned hypocritical on that point all too often, I continue
to try to be better, day by day. I know the right thing, things, to do. It
's just hard to stick with it continuously, y'know? And therein lies the
reason why so many Christians are stereotyped as hypocritical. We know what
we should be doing, but we're still human and we screw up too. But tomorrow
is a new day, y'know? Anyway, where was I...
Oh yeah, the second bit of wisdom I try to keep in mind. I'll wrap-up with
this. The other bit of wisdom or advice I like is as follows:
"Civilize the mind but make savage the body."
~ Chairman Mao
Thanks for the quote, Joe. I don't know if any of this is helpful for you,
LM.
All I can say is that each day is a new day. Every day we get to open our
eyes, is another chance to live gloriously if we so choose. It's definitely
easier to choose the lazy way. But lazy people don't get remembered by
their ancestors, or throughout history by others. At least not for
respectable reasons. (smile)
Hey, here's something for you, LM... the phrase, "Rise and Shine," is
actually biblical. It's in the book of Isaiah. It actually says, "Arise,
and shine." So now I'll end with this: Here's a message I send to my kids
via e-mail occasionally, and speak to them in the mornings even more:
"Wake up!
Arise--and shine!
This is the day the Lord has made.
I will rejoice and be glad in it!"
It's just something I threw together to help my kiddos and myself get our
mornings off to a better - and more rightly focused - start. Most of it's
straight outta the Bible. ;-)
Strive On, Lisamaria, Strive On!
