Kate,
I am a huge MMA and especially UFC fan. I have no television vision
whatsoever and therefore rely on the commentators to tell me what's goin on.
My favorite overall broadcast team in any sport now is Mike Goldberg and Joe
Rogan. "Goldy" is a great play-by-play man who describes the moves with
passion and depth. He used to do Redwing games and does Pac 10 football. He
is an excellent marketer of the fight game. Joe Rogan is a hilarious
comedian who is well versed in the moves of the ddifferent sports and
conveys the action with a wit that is a bit on the devilish side. It never
hurts Joe that he is respected in the community due to the fact that he can
go. Joe Rogan is a black belt in Tai-quan-doh, takes BJJ, and kickboxing.
Check out his wildly funny blog at joerogan.net. Warning: this blog is
mostly randomly funny and there is language and drug discussion as Joe is of
the "legalize it" sect.
I bet you the reason I enjoy the commentary so much and rarely get lost, I
follow along as well as if it were a baseball, hockey, or football game, is
a simple one. I wrestled for years in high school and after, my dad grew me
up a huge boxing fan as I love the sweet science, and I've taken judo and
Jujitsu so the terms are not foreign to me and I am rarely lost. If a person
who has never been a hockey fan turns on a hockey broadcast for the first
time, the terms power play, icing, multi-line passes, and slapshot mean
nothing to them until they are an experienced fan.
Yes Kate, wrapping up this post with a nice little sports and rec bow, if
you want to be a better fan of mixed martial arts, the easiest way is to
take some classes. Judo and Brazillian Jujitsu are out there locally in
everywhere USA now waiting for you to come learn, fight, and play. Do not
hesitate because of your blindness, we are out there throughout America
doing it daily. Join us. My coach says it is easier to teach a blind person
"feel sports" than sighted people because they always want to look when they
are suppossed to feel.

Hi all, I see that there are some MMA fans on this list. I just got into
watching this sort of stuff last year when I started dating my current
boyfriend. He's sighted himself so he watches this stuff while I listen to
the commentary during the fights. I really kind of enjoy it even though I'm
not able to see every little thing happening during a fight, especially when
the commentators start yapping about something and aren't giving play by
plays. My BF will fill me in occasionally, too, but often he's so engrossed
in it all himself that he forgets til I'm like "what? what? what's happening
now?"

We watch the UFC mostly, but we do watch Strike Force as well. How do y'all
keep up with what's going on with the fights? What websites do you find most
helpful? I've been on sherdog and MMANews.com. Are there any other good
blind friendly websites out there that you find helpful? I actually find the
official UFC website to be hurrendous. I don't know, maybe it's just me, but
the site seems ridiculously confusing to me. Even sherdog I occasionally
have a hard time navigating. The MMA News website seems to be the most
friendly site I've found so far.

Would love to hear from the MMA gurus on the list here. *smile*

Kate
