[Sportsandrec] Swimming

Cindy,

You might want to ask more specific questions and tell us some background.
It sounds like you have little swim experience. Like you I was not
encouraged to get involved in a sport. If I could put something into my
childhood, I would add more physical activity like dance or judo. Now I'm
into working out but not doing a sport. My most recent cardio activity is
spinning; got into it once I joined a health club. I played beep ball as a
kid and still do and that's the closest i've gotten to a sport. I had some
swim instruction but didn't get too far; it was private lessons.

I think you should try swimming. Its great exercise. Do you want to do it
for your own fitness and recreation or do you wish to make it a sport and
compete?

If you are learning the basics of swimming, I'd recommend private
instruction. Others can share how they learned. But I think the instructor
will have to guide you through the movements.
The instructor likely won't have had a blind student, so you'll have to tell
him/her how to help you.
If you want to try the college class go ahead. But in a class, you may not
get the instruction you need. In a class its taught by demonstration.
Depending on your vision, this may or may not help you.
Depending on the pace of the class the instructor
may be able to give individual guidance. I always took private lessons. I
only know the free style stroke well, so would like to try again.
I may not progress, but its worth trying since swimming is a good way to
exercise and has lots of benefits.
I'm not the most coordinated person so that was a challenge. Also I wasn't
able to swim straight.

Good luck.
Ashley
