[Sportsandrec] kayaks

Hi Ashley,
I used to go out in a single person kayak on a lake. I learned to orient
myself based on where sound landmarks were. For example, there was a freeway
on one side, a swimming area in one part where there were always kids
screaming, houses and docks on one side that I could hear echoes bounce off,
and even a narrow channel that passed under bridges which I enjoyed because
of the echoes. At first of course I had to go out with somebody until I was
familiar enough with that lake to put together the mental map. But once I
figured out what I could perceive and where it was the whole thing was very
easy and great fun. One of my friends wants to do river-kayaking which will
be different. But I bet it will be much the same. Just use your ears. Btw I
am totally blind.
Mike

Hi all,

I'd like to try some outdoor activities. Kayaks are one person boats. Have
you gone kayaking. If so, how did you stay oriented and learn what to do?

I was thinking of having a guide in front of me in another kayak. I have
some central vision. They could wear something bright so I could follow
them and communicate verbally. I guess someone would have to show me hands
on how to move the kayak.

Your ideas and first hand accounts would be great.

Ashley
