I have found that while walking with people, if I don't pay attention to my
surroundings, and watch my step, they will lead me into stuff.

How can you compare the two?  If you are walking sighted guide you have no
effort you need not pay any attention to your surroundings its totally the 
other person's responsability...you are "just along for the ride".    If you

are working with a guide dog you are still in charge of the situation and
you need to know where you are and have an idea of the route to your
destination. The dog is not going to read signs to you or otherwise identify
landmarks. Its still totally your problem to get from point A to point B
weather you are using a cane or a dog.  That can't be said if you are going
sighted guide.
