I'd agree. Check with the rehab people at the hospital. You could also get 
exercises from a physical therapist and that would help with range of 
motion.

There isn't a local YMCA?  If the hospital rehab is the only equiptment
available I would guess they might be open to the public.  The rehab
attached to the hospital near me has classes and a full gym for the use of
its employees as well as the public.  For a price of course.
If they are saying the lose of range of motion is permanent I would do
everything I could to strech it and enhance it to its greatest potental.  It
might not get back to 100% but it can improve and who knows your Dr. might
be wrong.
I can easily walk you through a pretty aggressive circut training type of
workout using what you have at home that will cover all the major muscle
groups as well as stimulate your cardio system and leave you sweating and
breathing hard.
Just let me know.
