Similar issues with step and step and sculpt, but definitely not as dynamic.

What about placing a fan directly in front of you and the box? That way you 
know you are centered.

I wonder if various textures could be placed on the top and if you could 
identify with your feet. That my be useful but not a total solution, but you 
might get enough feedback to make slight adjustments.
