Hi Lillie,
A treadmill is great for exercise. If your treadmill is at home, you
can put stickers or raised dots on the speed up and speed down buttons
and the start button so you can set your own speed. I just started
walking regularly on the treadmill a few months ago and I try to spend
20-30 minutes walking at 4 mph which is a challenging but comfortable
speed for me. I suggest finding a walking or jogging speed where you
are challenged but comfortable and gradually increase how long you
exercise as your endurance improves. If the treadmill you use is at a
public facility, just ask if you can put tactile markers on it such as
stickers or bump dots.
I also just learned about a great resource called Blind Alive at
www.blindalive.com
They make audio workouts you can do at home with enough description so
you don't have to look at a video. The cardio workouts can be done
with no special equipment just enough open space to move around. They
also have strength training workouts which only require hand weights.
Each workout costs $18.50 and you can buy it as a CD or an MP3
download. I bought 5-pound hand weights for about $20 on Amazon and
use them with the BlindAlive strength training workout.
