Hi Cindy.
Stops and starts I think are normal. I would suggest checking your local 
YMCA or Seniors' Center to see if they have any restorative yoga classes. 
Some of those stretches hurt like crazy at first but feel so good once you 
get into them.
Good luck and don't beat yourself up.
