Also depending on how far out you are, you may not have cell service.  This can be a real issue if you have an emergency.  

I have done quite a lot of hiking over the years and some of the trails are almost impossible to follow without some sighted assistance.  Heavy rains can wash out trails and make them even harder to follow.  I find it easier to feel the trails with my cane during the summer when the vegetation is thicker.  Well, that is true now that I live in Missouri.  I used to live in Arizona and there was a lot less vegetation.  You really didn't want to bump into some of the vegetation in Arizona. Lol

I currently live in walking distance of a several hundred acre park.  It has many rather easy hiking trails, but it is hard for me to follow them with my cane, they tend to curve around and join up with lots of different trails.  There are a few gravel roads that go through the park for park employee use.  I am able to feel these roads with my cane and stay on them.  I do walk to the park and walk on the gravel roads by myself.  Someday I hope to learn a couple of the hiking trails, there is one that goes along the creek that I would like to be able to use.

I'm curious to know if there are certain GPS apps that people are using for hiking and other outdoor experiences.

Cited or unsighted it would never be recommended to go on your own. I used to work on a mountain rescue team and the multiple amounts of problems that there were. For one simple reason if something happens to you then how to notify others. This isn’t the beginning of a close call… Cited or non-cited it would not be recommended to go on your own
