Hi RJ
I use Jaws 9 & Word 2003. In Word, the default format is 12 point,
Times New Roman, single-spaced, aligned left. You can determine the
format of a document or passage by selecting it and then using the Jaws
key (Insert on the calculator pad) and the letter "f."
If you want to change the format -- and I encourage you to use double
spacing for your writing, as it is the standard for submissions -- you
can use the format menu (alt + o). The first thing on the menu is the
Font dialog. If you wish to change font type, style (bold, italic
etc.), point size or color, press enter and use the tab key to move
through the choices.
If you want to change the paragraph formatting, do alt + o, down arrow
once to Paragraph and press enter. The dialog opens on "Indents &
Spacing page, Alignment: combo box which is set by default to "left."
You can down arrow to choose "centered, right or justified."
Next tab to Outline Level which is set to "Body Text." The other
choices are levels 1 through 9. I've never used them; I assume they're
for making outlines.
The next two tabs are left and right edit spin boxes; by default they
are both set to "0." I don't know what these are for.
Next is one of the two most likely things you'll want to use, the
"Special" combo box, which is set by default to "none." This means
that, when you press the Enter key to go to a new paragraph, there will
be no indentation. If you use this setting, you must either use a tab
or and extra blank line to seperate the paragraphs. If you down arrow,
you will find: "First line" which automatically indents the beginning of
a new paragraph. Down arrow again gets you to the "Hanging" indent,
which I believe is used in outlines or lists where you number something
and want the second line to fall directly under the beginning of the
text rather than under the number/letter.
The next tab says"By edit spin box," which refers to the amount of
indent for the paragraph. By default, wen "Special" is set to "None,"
this box is empty. If you choose "First Line," this box automatically
changes to 0.5 inches. You can use the arrow keys to select a different
amount, if you choose, but I've never done it.
The next two tabs are the Before & After edit spin boxes which are set
to "0 PT" for both the Special" and "First" line choices, and I have no
idea what they are for.
Next, tab to the "Line Spacing" combo box, which is at "single" by
default. Down arrow through the choices: "1.5 lines, double, at least,
exactly, multiple." My sighted friends tell me that "at least" is a
nice compromise for reading print for letters, since it is easier than
single spacing, but doesn't leave the large amount of space that double
leaves.
Next there is something called "At" and then "Tabs." After that are the
OK and Cancel options.
Hope this helps,
Donna Hill
