But I wish to correct something.  Laura Bridgman was not the first
deaf-blind person to get an education--merely the first in America, although
there was another who was successfully homeschooled in the middle of the
seventeenth century, at a Pligrim settlement.  Not counting that one, the
first to receive formal education would be Victorine Morriseau at the Royal
Institute for the Instruction of the Deaf in Paris.

But aside from Milton and Homer, Laura Bridgman was the first real blind
celebrity.  Louis Braille didn't become famous until much later.

Does the blind community have an arch-villain?

     For several years, I have been helping the Jacobus tenBroek Memorial 
Library (JTL) collect items related to the history of the blind and in 
particular the works created by the blind. Walking Alone has already been 
cited. There is another book written about the ACB titled People of Vision 
(I may be off on the title.). Dr. Jernigan gave a speech, "Is History 
Against Us". This speech which is available as electronic text cites a 
number of famous blind people. Much information can be found in Beauties and

Achievements of the Blind. I don't know if this book is available 
electronically. Dr. tenBroek's books are hard to find with the exception of 
the one he wrote on the Fourteenth amendment. This book was used as the 
basis for the arguments that were used to force the government to pay 
reparations to the Japanese for their forced internment during World War II.

     It is my opinion that the two best known blind people are Louis Braille

and Helen Keller. Stories about them are in children's literature books. 
Many people may not realize it, but Fanny J. Crosby was blind and wrote 
between six and eight thousand hymns (Estimates vary.). Laura Dewey 
Bridgeman was actually the first deaf-blind child to receive an education. 
One book about her is The Imprisoned Guest. Hope this helps.
