[stylist] Doctors in the blind community

Lori, Lori!

The fact that Jernigan's and Mauer's were merely honorary degrees makes the
title even more gauche, even more immature tot use! They didn't even earn
real doctorates, and when they have honorary awards, they felt the need to
call themselves Dr.? Or was it the blind community that felt the need?

No wonder I was so suspicious. You understand, if one has a Ph.D, common
usage is that, if you do have to mention it, you use the Ph.D, not the Dr.
Dr. is for M.D. For everyone else it's silly or . . . gasp, in this case,
fake!

Yes, a nonorary degree is a great honor. But you just do NOT go around with
the Dr. title. If it is to be mentioned at all, for certain documents where
all important titles are mentioned, then what you do is add L.HD or Litt.D
or D.DL, or whatever next to their names to signify honorary degrees.

Now, I am positively outraged. I think I'll write an article on this and
send it to the Monitor.

John

Dr. tenBroek's doctorate was earned in College. Dr. Jernigan and Dr.
Maurer's doctorates are honorary, awarded by colleges for their work with
the blind
community. Dr. tenBroek started the NFB, and gave as much if not more
service to the Blind community as the others.
All three of these men deserve their titles. It has nothing to do with
inferiority or superiority but with service. The titles are well deserved,
and
we use them as a mark of respect. This is not to say that many of us have
not
given as much service. Probably we have. But that's fine. I don't need

a Dr. in front of my name to tell me what I've accomplished. At the same
time, I'm not going to dishonor those who have one.
I hope this doesn't become a controversy!
Lori
