Ah, the darned computer age!  I did type "meerly" as in m e e r l y, but the
computer corrected it without my permission.  I experimented a bit just now
by retyping it, and true enough, the instant I press the space bar, it
changed to "merely"--so I had to go back and change it to make it stick.
Anyway, my point is that meerly is more true English than merely, which is
more French, so that shows us what a mutt modern English really is.  More
"genuine" English is very, very different from what we use today.
