[stylist] Tragic endings?

Cindy:

What book is that?

Last year I was astounded by a short story that appeared in RNIB's magazine,
Short Stories, available through NLS. The story had no sex, wasn't about
money, and nobody died, and it had a very, very happy ending . . . And it
simply blew my mind away. I absolutely love that story. Called "Hope and
Faith Fly Away." Wow! What an accomplishment to make a most stirring,
memorable, moving story that brought tears of joy to my eyes and without the
writer using any of the obvious props of the trade: sex, money, or death!
Not even high stakes. But it worked!

Are any of you getting the RNIB Short Stories? If so, I'm sure you'll
remember this story. When they started going through Raymond Carver'[s
collected short stories, I was really happy. Carver is GREAT, a minimalist
master of the highest order! If you're not getting the Short Stories, you
better request it now, or you'll miss the second half of Carver's stories!

My very favorite book had me bawling the last three chapters. Even upon
re-reading it when I know what is going to happen it still pulls at my
emotions.

In fact, a tragic ending sometimes makes a book more memorable than a happy
everything worked out ending
