One, this would be a great service.
Two, he should sign up for Choice Magazine Listening. (www.choicemag.com)
They have stories and articles that are well written from a variety of
different magazines with many of them being literary mags that we do not
have easy access to. While you do not get a full over-view of any one
magazine, you will begin recognize where an article came from. They are
really good about giving you the name of the article, author, and where it
was published at both the beginning and end of the article.
Three, www.duotrope.com is a great database for giving you a sorting method
to looking up possible markets. You still need to link through to the
market's official guidelines but they often will give you a little more of a
clue about something when you can't just pick up a mag and flip through to
see what they have. I typically will use them as a guide if I really see a
market that looks promising to go to the library and scan a copy.
Hope that helps.
