[stylist] Editing with JAWS

Hi Ashley and Judith,
In word docs, Insert f tells more than just the font face, style and
point size. It also tells the basic formatting like line spacing,
paragraph style, alignment, etc. This info is only available in Office
Word (.doc) documents, not in text docs and e-mail. It tends to be very
accurate for checking a paragraph, and not so much when selecting an
entire document. I've had cases where every paragraph will say "12
point, Times New Roman, Normal Style" etc. when done individually, but
when looked at as a whole, it will say "mixed point mixed font mixed
style." I've gotten into the habit of checking my book chapters with
Insert f a paragraph at a time. The other thing that is tricky is
checking a line at a time (especially lines like Chapter titles when I
want to double-check that I've centered, boldfaced and increased the
font size). I find that the Jaws's command for selecting a line actually
picks up more than the line, usually including the next line down which
doesn't have the boldface, centering etc. What I do is select line and
then back-track character by character till I unselect the last
character in the line. Once I know where I am, I reselect that character
to ensure that I have the line I want and nothing else.
