[stylist] A Haiku I Wrote This Morning

Barbara,
I have copied some information from a forms book that I cut apart so it
would lie flat on my scanner. Not sure the format will be the same. It deals
with short syllabic oriental poetry like the Haiku. It has some sources
listed in it.
I think I remember long ago that you sent us all a sestina, and I mentioned
how difficult of a form that was. Truly, all you have to do is to enter a
form in your Google edit box and it will bring up articles on that form. It
is much more accurate than scanning.
I think since you wrote this e-mail, several have mentioned forms books. The
best one I know of is "The Book of Forms by Lewis Turco. Not the latest one
which really has a convoluted index, but the earliest one. Possibly hard to
get. I do not know if you are completely blind, or can use a CCTV. All the
forms with repeated lines a pattern, and strict syllable rules, or line
length, etc. are confusing with just JAWS but it can be done. Just move like
a turtle. The rest may pass you, but you will get there.

ORIENTAL FORMS- All syllabic, unrhymed
SEDOKA-- 5, 7, 7 5, 7, 7 MINNOW UNIVERSE
in a secret dell
beside a murmuring brook the yellow marsh marigold puts down thirsty roots
making little yellow suns
for the world of the minnow.

SENRYU-- 5, 7, 5 like haiku, but about people
rubbing leather hands
he toasts his ancient body over the hearth fire

SIJO- Sijo is a Korean form-traditionally 3 lines of 14 to 16 syllables each
line- total syllables 44-46. Each line is broken in the middle by a pause
similar to a caesura in metric poetry. The sijo may have a theme or it may
be a narrative. First line introduces a subject, "turns"
in line two, and resolves in line three, often with a humorous twist. Check
the Internet for pages of information.

TANKA 5, 7, 5, 7, 7 syllables
The tanka is fairly common and highly regarded by those who enjoy syllabic
forms. It is sometimes titled, sometimes not, and can be used in a sequence
if one wishes to use it in that way.
example:
beyond the breakers
a buttonhole horizon
the gold moon slips through
gilds a trail over dark swells sparkles white caps with sequins
It seems to me that entering a haiku, a tanka, senryu or other oriental form
category in a contest is a lot like a lottery. You usually do not know who
the judge is, or whether he or she is a traditionalist or modernist. Usually
contests sponsored by the various fine journals whose pages are devoted to
oriental forms seem to me to have winners that are more modern than
traditional in form, while the same categories in contests sponsored by
states or NFSPS are more likely to yield winners of a more traditional type.
This is not always so, just something I have observed. You enter and take
your chances on what will have an impact on the judge. One
thing I have noticed is that many winning haikus seem to have the moon as
one of their syllables. No, I don't know why.
If oriental forms intrigue you, check out POETS MARKET and	-
possibly subscribe to "The Alchemist" (Canada), "Brussels Sprout", "Cicada",
"Dragonfly", "Frogpond", "Haiku Magazine" (Canada), "Haiku Byways"
(England), "Haiku Headlines", "Haiku Highlights", "Haiku West", "Haiku
Zasshi Zo Ko" (Japan), "Mayfly", "Modern Haiku", "Old Pond", "Pine Needles",
"The Red Pagoda," & "Wind Chimes." Some of these may
no longer be publishing, but you can check it out. There are also books
which will give you detailed information on the history and development of
haiku and other oriental forms. One of these is "The Haiku Handbook -How to
Write, Share, and Teach Haiku" - 331 pages.William J. Higginson (with Penny
Harter). Kodansha International.ISBN: 4-7700-1430-9
You could also send an SASE to The Haiku Society of America, Japan House,
333 East 47th Street New York NY 10017, and ask for their recommendations,
or check out websites on the internet.

>From the Poet Within by Ann Gasser. A friend sent this to me. There is no
website listed in it, or a way to order. Perhaps she is on the internet now.
It is a complete book of all forms. There are some mistakes. She has written
a poem for every form. (140). That is where the mistakes, if any, are found.
I did not include all of the oriental forms, as many are longer than you
might want to attempt now.

I didn't know haiku didn't have titles, either. Is there a name for it if
you wtrote haiku stanzas; each stanza being one haiku poem but a bunch of
them on the same topic? I've not written much haiku because they are soooo
short.

Jacqui, do you know where one can find an extensive list of different kinds
of poems? You seem to have a wealth of info on that topic. I mainly write
quatrains where the second and fourth lines rhyme but am trying to break out

of that mold. That's why I've been trying my hand at sestinas and
villanelles--most are terrible--and I even wrote a terza rima and a rhyme
royale. I'm no good at sonnets either but have written a couple.

Jim,
Another good one. There is a rule that says Haiku has no title. In this case
your title is part of your poem. You might have to re-write it so that the
leaves are incorporated into the poem.
Keep at it.

Hi Jackie,
How are you so creative?

Here's one I wrote after I saw what happened as I took the dogs out on
Saturday.

Saturday Leaves

Blasted from your perch,
Piled against my front gate, dead,
You'll feed my garden.

Jim,
You have just written your second Haiku!

Tone deaf-listening-
the great symphony of life
is inspired by you.

While Haiku are usually written about a snapshot of nature, I much prefer
the ones written about human qualities. If I recall, the ones dealing with
human nature may be called a Senryu. They are both Japanese and if you are
not entering a contest, who cares.

Hi Jackie,
I just want to say that you are inspiring me to keep trying. In this group I
feel like a tone-deaf listener to the symphony.

Shawn and Jim,
These are both great Haiku. They show great insight. Both could also be
"Poetweets."

And here's a haiku that kind-of explains my absence from the list of late.

Mighty flood of life
That sweeps me to the future
In vain I struggle.
