Yes, Vejas, I did read 'The Kite Runner' and enjoyed it thoroughly. I
suppose I shouldn't be surprised that you aren't . Although I read it
several years ago, I don't remember having any difficulty with the
transitions. Yes, the sexual assault is horrible, and that scene will always
stick with me. Like the violence in the Hunger Games, that scene was to
clearly show what a coward and spoiled kid Amir was. That he couldn't even
comfort his servant, his best friend, showed an extreme lack of character.
During his teenage years and early twenties, he isn't much better, and it
isn't until his thirties that he finally faces up to the cowardice he showed
all those years ago and becomes a man with strength of character . Although
the book may have romantic elements, it is in no way a romance. Aside from
showing the changes in Amir, it is an excellent look at Afghanistan, from
Soviet control to the takeover by the Taliban and the horrors of Muslim
fundamentalism. When the people escape in the empty oil tanker, is shows the
extremes humans will go through to survive.I found it to be a very powerful
book.
