Write what you know.  How many people have read the story about the blind
detective? Probably not many.   How many other detective stories about
sighted detectives in New York City are in circulation?  Plenty. How many
westerns start with the main character pushing through the bat wing doors
and just standing there looking at in the saloon, plenty.   Just make your
story unique.  What does this blind detective do that the other didn't?
What about his background makes him unique?   His own personal style if you
will. Write it, and see what you come up with.  
Instead of using the word butterflies for your romance, use a fluttering in
her stomach.  I have seen the butterflies in stories before however. This is
just food for thought.
