Very true Lynda. I believe the words poetry or poem can send an otherwise
very enlightened and well read person into a frozen tundra of fear. LOL
I find poetry a challenge but ironically short stories and such are even
more so for me. I have also given this following advice as a writer to
other writers. Do not concern yourself so much with how your poem will be
interpreted. Just find joy that it has been interpreted at all. The reader
brings their own experience and you, as the writer, merely bring the words.
Never be put off if the interpretation is not quite what you had in mind.
We give our words to be shared. Be content with that. Always remember that
we may write for ourselves but so too does the reader read for themselves.
Professor T (it's the only name he wanted to be called LOL) was a
wonderful mentor. I saw him once a few years after college and he asked if I had
found that 'pen' yet. I was holding the hands of two young children at the
time so he just smiled and said when the time is right I would. He has
since passed away but I believe that wherever he is, I have made him proud.

Yes, this is the key to developing writing. I like to choose a poet and
then
read everything written and published by and about that poet. I am a
retired
English Professor! You never know what gems you'll find until you do the
DELVING - your professor was so right about that. We give out the
information to the student, then you never know how long it will be before
(or if) the student will actually understand the lesson. It can take many
years for a lesson to dwell inside of a student as she continues to grow
intllectually and emotionally to reach the maturity that it requires to
understand the lesson. I have students contact me long after they have
left
school, to remind me they were in one of my classes and tell me how much
they loved the class or something they learned during that experience.

Here is something I learned from Rita Dove, the poet. She spoke about how
when being interviewed everyone wants to talk ABOUT the poet, but very few
want to discuss the poem. People are afraid and intimidated by a poem.
It
takes a lot of hard work to read and even begin to understand a good poem
-
and most people are far too lazy to do the work it requires.
