Yes, this is the key to developing writing. I like to choose a poet and then 
read everything written and published by and about that poet. I am a retired 
English Professor!  You never know what gems you'll find until you do the 
DELVING - your professor was so right about that. We give out the 
information to the student, then you never know how long it will be before 
(or if) the student will actually understand the lesson. It can take many 
years for a lesson to dwell inside of a student as she  continues to grow 
intllectually and emotionally to reach the maturity that it requires to 
understand the lesson.  I have students contact me long after they have left 
school, to remind me they were in one of my classes and tell me how much 
they loved the class or something they learned during that experience.

Here is something I learned from Rita Dove, the poet. She spoke about how 
when being interviewed everyone wants to talk ABOUT the poet, but very few 
want to discuss the poem.  People are afraid and intimidated by a poem.  It 
takes a lot of hard work to read and even begin to understand a good poem - 
and most people are far too lazy to do the work it requires.
