I'd do it too, but I have no idea how to set up a group.

Hi Eve,

I would like to share my experiences with FB private pages. this is my own
experience with several of the FB private groups I participate in just about
every day:

It is much easier and far more interesting to me, to navagate and use FB
than it is to use my email. FB allows for a much more personal way of
communication because everything that is being discussed is directly below
the beginning of the topic. No more sifting through emails trying to figure
out who said what, and trying to find what is current. It is all
chronological, with the time it was posted, so you always know exactly where
you are in the conversation.

I really love the "message" feature on FB because it is in "real time." FB
is so easy to communicate instantly and have discussions. On FB, a student
can "message" the teacher or one of the students, and get a response very
quickly - or can communicate privately if that is the desire. I love
messaging with my FB friends - it is like we are sitting together in a room
and having a nice chat together. It is especially good for creative people
to brainstorm ideas together in this way.

I am a member of another NFB group at Krafters-Korner - we use email, but we
also use FB and a blog or website, too. One of the members on that group
set up the FB for the group and she monitors it and puts up the photos
there, I think. This was a fairly recent addition by the group. It's nice
because we can communicate with other FB groups, too, as we share our
"finds" with each other.

The other thing that group does, which is really wonderful, is that
different members volunteer to teach a class or classes in something they
can do, or have a keen interest in. This is done via phone. It is not a part
of the regular phone call conferences or chats that they do, but it is in
addition to those regular calls. They often have others participate in the
chats - not just members. One particular chat was conducted by a quilter -
she is a pro at quilting - so she volunteered to lead a discussion on it.
She is not visually impaired but it was very successful.

For example, I volunteered to lead a discussion on a topic that was a two
night discussion, via phone. It was really fun and I enjoyed it very much.
After that, there was a lot of interest in the topic, so I taught two
additional classes. they were "hands on" classes in which we all worked on a
project together. This kind of teaching happens all te time with that group
and it really keeps the people connected and sharing experiences together as
they learn together.

If the "classes" for our list were set up on a private FB page, then nobody
but those who sign up as members of that page will be able to access it.
That is a good thing as it would keep it just for our group. Another
advantage is that when a class being taught there it is much easier to FIND
the class there. The teacher can post lessons, videos, photos, etc.
Students can pick and choose what they are interested in doing.

Because I am a fiber artist, I am involved in a group of fiber related
topics, too. It is really fun. The person who moniters the group set up
ground rules that work so well. There is absolutely no negative
communications permitted. If you don't like what someone has posted, then
just ignore it - no need to be confrontational with anyone at all. The
group is totally uplifting and encouraging and so much fun because of that.

There is nothing for sale or any kind of marketing permitted. There are
some other rules, I cannot remember right now. The group grew to over 500
members in the first two months after it was opened.

Finally, I am a member of another group of blind people, too. This group is
just for discussing blind issues as they relate to our own experiences - and
we have world wide participation in it. There is a nice atmosphere of
friendship there with the members being encouraging and helpful and having
fun together on all sorts of topics.

This is my experience with FB private pages used for groups. Totally
positive and very enjoyable and terrific for the learning environment. I
honestly cannot think of anything negative to say about the groups I enjoy
being a part of through FB.
