[stylist] writing prompts, welcome, and facebook

Hi Linda,
I'm really sorry to hear about the fire and recession etc, I hope
Sandy doesn't hit too hard.
I personally reckon the Fb group should be "closed" rather than
"secret" so people who don't know about this list can see it is
there. Because isn't part of the point of doing this in the
first place to let more blind writers access it than those who
have stumbled across the e-mail list? :) There could be a system,
like say every time a person not belonging to this list requests
to join, the admin sends a message saying "Please tell us why
you'd like to be a member of this group" or something, and if
they don't respond they don't get in, in order to keep out people
who perhaps shouldn't be there?
Just some thoughts :)
Aine

Hi Aine,
Yes, that is right, the FB page would be an addition to the
conversation/class via phone. And, I agree that it needs to be
private - it
is for our members only - and each person would be added to the
FB page by
the administrator. That is how it works. The ones I belong to
are very
successful with lots of participation and fun among the members.
Members of the Writer's group, can invite a friend to join the
group as they
would have to be a Writer's group member to be able to be on the
FB page.
It is a compliment to the list as it is, and not anything that
would take
people away from this list - it is an additional perk that comes
with being
a member of this list, in a way.
Rains are beginning here in PA now, and we are to have snow as
the week
progresses. Hope everyone is safe and out of the storm. Last
night, for
hours, we heard and saw emergency personnel going by, as a local
mill was on
fire - just across the creek from my house - about 1/2 mile from
here. I
believe it has been completely destroyed by fire - not good at
all for our
little community to be losing even more jobs - the recession has
hit western
PA so hard you just feel so sad and now, something else, this
fire that will
take away lots more jobs here.

Thanks for the welcome Chris
Regarding Facebook - a couple things ...
Firstly, I don't think anyone wanted to get rid of this e-mail
list, only
to create a Facebook group as a supplement. I've watched this
happen on
(at least) 2 other lists I can think of right now and it's
worked
reasonably well in that Facebook will attract some more people
that this
list won't and vice versa so there's no need to be on both, even
though
quite a few people probably will be.
Secondly, I think it would make more sense to make a closed
group (which
in Fb's terminology means a group where to join, either the
admin has to
approve the request or a current group member has to add you),
rather than
a page as for one person with adding friends, if that's what was
meant by
a "private page"?
With respect to the writing prompts: yeah I'd be willing to give
it a go
for sure but it will definitely depend on how busy I am as it
probably
does for many of us. Even if one month a prompt for whatever
reason only
inspires one person-I think that's still worth it right? :) Of
course more
participation means more fun though, so I'd say we should all
attempt to
make a commitment to at least writing every 2nd or 3rd one.
And I hope this hurricane doesn't cause too much havoc, stay
safe guys.
:)

Firstly, I'd like to welcome Aine. I hope your exams go well,
and that
you have a fabulous summer as we in the US are preparing for old
man
Winter.
Eve, my gut reaction is to politely decline your request and
wish you all
the best in attempting to breathe some much needed life into
this group.
We've tried doing this through writing prompts a number of
times, and at
best we get maybe 5% participation. For those who spend hours
writing a
piece to share with the group, it's very disheartening when
nobody reads
or responds . Although I'm a cynic, I'm also a bit of an
optimist, so
I'll agree to give it one more try. I'll come up with a writing
prompt
for the group for November, and we'll see how it goes. I'd love
to read a
dozen or more responses, and it would be fantastic if folks
would give
constructive feedback so we can all grow in our craft. The one
caveat is
that I live in Connecticut, about 20 miles from the coast, and
we are
expected to get slammed by hurricane Sandy tomorrow. Schools
have already
been cancelled through Wednesday, and it's likely we will lose
power. So,
if I don't post a prompt on November 1, I'll get to it as soon
as the
power is back on.
Lastly, if the group decides to move to facebook for
interactions, that's
great, but I won't be joining in. I have a facebook account,
and use it
to promote my writing and on occasion to share things with my
friends, but
my experience of facebook is that it's primarily a time sucker,
and not
very meaningful to me.
Until next time,
chris
