Seems like a lie to me.

Well intended or not, it is still a lie and could still really hurt someone 
when, or if, they found out.

I'd go the Oprah route, or write the artist directly and if that didn't 
work, if the person didn't respond, it is the truth of that person's true 
nature.

Who is going to say no to the kid? Well, unless they're an as*****, that is.

 A kid with cancer is still a kid,  and her uncle trying to get the 
celebrity onboard is the true deed, not whether or not he succeeds.
