There does indeed have to be a balance struck.  I have found that though I
offer to assist people with stuff, I am very rarely taken up on my offers.
But I do offer, and think that it is necessary tot do so.

Thank you for this very well thought out response to Vejas's question. I
agree completely. Good relationships are balanced, equal endeavors. Like
you, I accept rides from friends who won't accept money for gas, although I
always offer it. But, I repay them with bottles of wine, or watching their
kids, or making them dinner, or helping to shovel their driveway. Other
friends accept the gas money, and that's fine too. The give and take need to
be deemed reciprocal by the people in relationship.
