I really like this response. So honest and refreshing.
It makes me think of my days in Africa when my pragmatic houseboy was a
professed Christian, but always went to the medicine man as well. It was
like double indemnity. He made out pretty well working both sides of the
fence. He was as smart as a crow.  (I do not visualize a whip as being
smart.)

Although I'm mostly an ex-Catholic, I keep mysaints around for backup.  
Especially, I sometimes pray to Saint Thomas More, the lawyer saint, to 
get me out of scrapes and to intervene on my behalf when I'm too 
embarrassed to go to Mother Mary for stuff.  I'm fairly well convinced 
that the saints have always been provided as a kind of backup network 
when the pagan gods were kicked to the curb.  Even when I was 
practicing, though, I still looked upon springtime as the season of the 
Goddess, and now, having quit the Church, I still go into my old church, 
Saint James Cathedral in Seattle, and visit with the saints and take in 
a breath or two of incense. But nowadays I think of God as the sapient 
ocean through whom we swim, so I'm a kind of religious juggling act, 
practicing five or six relgiosities dpending upon my mood, what time I 
got out of bed that morning, and other such variables. Mostly, though, I 
just maintain an attitude of gratitude for my friends and family, for 
the fact that that, on these hot summer days I can easily grab a bottle 
of icy cold water from our ice box when there are many others in our 
world who have to hike 20 miles in 115 degree heat to fill a 20 pound 
bucket of lukewarm water for their family, and for the fact that I can 
rise late on Sunday morning to write this pleasant email to my distant 
friend Debby and all of our smart gifted friends.  As I recently said in 
a recent FB post, we are emperors.
