Perhaps you could have a Brit proof read your stuff. I have seen widely 
published American authors write about the UK or other places in Europe, 
placing their American characters there or having characters from Europe so 
as long as you're careful I'd say go for it.
The British character I'm currently working with in one of the books was 
born in the 1800's, and is now in modern times in the U.S so he's more 
learning how it is here so I'm lucky. LOL.
