[stylist] question about terminology

Vejas,

Technically, yes, it's perfectly fine to use the British spelling of words
since that is how it's spelled in the UK. However, your teachers and many
American editors and publishers will not accept British spellings. I've
actually seen American publications sites addressing this very issue.

So on your own, yes, spell the way you prefer, but when it comes to school
and American publications, I would ask first.

Incidently, I too also prefer to spell and use the British version of words.
I shouldn't admit this, but I often break out into a British dialect, and
worse, I often don't realize I'm doing it, LOL! At least people think it's
convincing, smile.

I also pick up accents and dialects and even inflections very easily, and
again, don't always realize it. I had an aunt, through marriage, from New
Jersey, and she had a very pronounced Jersey dialect. Every time I spoke
with her, I started using a Jersey dialect, LOL!

Bridgit

Subject: [stylist] question about terminology

Hi,
I had a question and was curious about your thoughts.
Lately, I have become very interested in British English from reading
different books that take place in the UK and websites.
I find it much more interesting to write words such as whilst instead of
while and favourite instead of favorite. And also words such as realise,
socialise and practise.
I was wondering if, as an American, it is appropriate to use them in my
everyday writing (stories, school papers, etc?) It is English after all.
Thoughts?
Vejas
