[stylist] directed at versus inspired by

Does anyone besides me see a subtle difference between whether you are writing a piece directed toward a specific person or group versus writing a piece inspired by a person or group? Or am I just trying to justify a behavior. Albeit the cinquains that I have been writing are the result of a current situation in my life, if one were to go through my years of poetry you would find the theme runs through them.
