[stylist] editing questions

I attended Creative Nonfiction's writing conference back in May. One of the
presentations was on self-publishing, given by a publisher who started by
using self-publishing platforms and now has his own independent press.
Here's some info he gave:

Almost 500,000 titles are self-published a year. Of these, 90% are full of
errors either in the writing, editing, design and/or marketing. He stressed
the importance of good story editors and copyeditors because of this. Only
about 5% make more than a nominal amount of money even when publishing
several titles.

There are a lot of pros to self-publishing, and it has become a very viable
option, but it's good to know all the pros and cons before making a
decision.

Hi Sarah,

If you think you might need an editor--you probably need an editor. In all
the articles I've read about self-publishing, and advice from agents--the
number one critique is that writers don't do a good job editing their own
work. Bridgit's suggestion to continually work on your craft is spot on, in
my opinion, but in the meantime, you should find someone who knows what they
are doing and isn't afraid of hurting your feelings. If you don't want
honest criticism, don't bother paying someone.

Good luck,

Chris
