How do sighted people use “accessible” in regards to accessing print material?

It depends who the audience the poet is writing for. Take Shel Silverstein for example. He’s a genius in his own way. Which easier to understand than Elizabeth browning or Shakespeare but still notable and unforgettable. I can “so many from where the sidewalk ends because we how to copy as a child.

I don’t mean to start a whole new concept here, but I have a question and it’s regarding where do usage. Does anyone else feel like the word “accessible” is thrown around and lost its meaning? We talk about having accessibility to print material but it means something very different to sighted people. I hear it used And feel like it’s overused. These are crazy things that ruminate in my brain. I’d rather be writing this stuff down then packing for the move but I have a living room still full of some crap that isn’t in boxes. Tomorrow we sign on the dotted line and start moving things in! Saturday is the big day with the movers coming. And thankfully, it will be 42 and sunny on Saturday! You Southerners wouldn’t understand, but us in the upper states should. Who wants rain or in our case you’re in Wisconsin a blizzard?! I moved my aunt once in a blizzard and that was no fun!

That is my problem with a lot of poetry. It is more comprehensible to the poet than it is to me.

I hope the poems I write are accessible.

Brigit,
thanks for the information. My critique group is in a senior center, and I bring both poetry and other writings to it.
Though none are poets, they give me helpful feedback on whether the poem is accessible. I,, personally, do not like to have to hear a poem six times to try to make sense of it, so I listen carefully to their common sense comments. the difference is I sometimes precede the reading with some comments. I will try not to do that anymore. It definitely makes sense.

Jackie,

Yes, this is standard for poetry as well. Again, it helps the writer better understand what is working and what is not. In workshops, it's rare for prose and poetry to be mixed. So, poets workshop with other poets, and prose writers workshop with other prose writers. Public writing groups you find in your community will have a mix of prose and poetry. And if you've ever participated in a writing retreat, there will be a mix. But actual workshops do not mix, or it's rare.

I will say, in my experience, at the end of a workshop, the writer is given time to provide any insight and ask follow-up questions. And this is how I run workshops too.
