Ann, I think the problem comes when it is made to look exclusive. Being discriminated against because of color is no different than being discriminated against of any other box you can put the checkmark by.

Hi all,
This poem was written after a few diversity seminars. The context is that I struggle with wanting to be a part of the diversity solution but often feel because of being white, I find myself afraid to join in even though my heart aches to help.
Thanks for reading.
On the inside
By Ann Chiappetta

White on the surface
Experience-tinted
Female- Pigmented
Painted with blind, somber Hues

I met Ugliness
Who yelled
Threatened
rejected
and Spat.

Fear is Shame; shame is fear.
Words pressed with plastic keys
Are the hope released
Dispersed in the collective atmosphere.
