Greetings, Below is a note that Roger erpelding wrote that is a good example
of what we talked about and how to do it. You don't need to be flowery, nor
long, just tell your Senator and Representative how you feel.

It is quite important that when you do this that you make sure that you send
a copy of it to at least one of us on the Legislative Committee.

Subject: legislation

Dear Senator Petersen,

My name is Roger Erpelding, and I live at 3721 Grand Avenue, Apartment 408.
I moved into your legislative district in July of this year.

I am writing to ask for your support in legislative matters. The first deals
with accessible prescription labels from pharmacies. This legislation will
promote independence for all blind people and would give all of us equal
access to all medications.

The second issue involves accessible and mobile voting for all blind people.
I am pleased to report that when I voted last November at my local precinct,
the accessible voting machine was available and functional. Unfortunately,
this has not always been the case. At a former precinct, I was present for
an hour while officials wrestled to make the machine workable. The printed
ballot is of a different size, and must be transported by someone to the
ballot box; therefore, this is not truly a secret ballot. Some blind
people, for various reasons, do not make it in person to the precinct.
Therefore, mobile voting is important, and as far as I know, security issues
have not been a problem for other groups of folks.

Senators Bolton and Bisignano, along with Representative Forbes have
presented proposed legislation to the legislative service bureau to prepare
for submission. It is possible that these above proposals might be given to
the state government committee.

On January 16, 2024, I plan to be at the Capitol for a Legislative Day. If
schedule permits, I would very much look forward to meeting with you in
person to discuss the above legislative proposals. Passage of these bills
would promote first class citizenship for all blind Iowans.

Thank you for your time, consideration and support.

Sincerely,

Roger Erpelding

Member, Des Moines Chapter,

National Federation of the Blind of Iowa
