Bryan,

First turn be sure that zoom is toggled on with command option 8.
To zoom on a macbook trackpad you can use command option and two finger 
gesture;
Keyboard commands however are as follows:
command option plus to zoom in
command option minus to zoom out.

Reduce contrast with control option command comma
Increase contrast with control option command period

This is all under universal access, system preferences.

I hope it works well for you.  Though truly an investment, for me a mac 
has been a good investment.
