Job Description:



To provide adaptive and assistive technology solutions, customer training and technical support to blind and visually impaired Minnesotans in need of independent living assistance. This employee will be expected to have a developed understanding and the ability to work within the following systems:

-Applications/Programs/Software
-Operating Systems
-Personal Computers
-Personal Devices (smartphones, tablets, iPads, iPods etc.

This position also serves as a resource to Senior Services Unit (SSU) service providers, community-based agencies, partners, and other interested persons in utilizing and adapting information systems and developing assistive technology solutions for blind and visually impaired seniors and independent living consumers.

Traveling is part of the job, mostly in the 9 county metro area, but incumbent will also need to travel sometimes to other parts of the state.

Job Duties:
1. Train customers in the use of assistive technology.
2. Conduct technology assessments and make recommendations to service providers.
3. Develop partnerships with a wide variety of public and private entities in order to develop the needed resources to provide high quality service to blind and visually impaired seniors.
4. Participate as a team member with the Senior Services Unit to provide individualized adjustment and educational services to blind and visually impaired customers.
5. Participate in an overall SSU marketing strategy that will help inform Minnesotans about State Services for the Blind (SSB) services and other resources that will be applicable to blind/visually impaired seniors.
6. Provide technical assistance to customers and SSB staff.
7. Provide ongoing continuing education to Senior Services Unit staff on emerging assistive technology applications.

Minimum Qualifications:

Two years professional or para-professional experience performing assistive technology services in an organization (public or private) whose mission includes the provision of services to persons who are injured or disabled so that an understanding and sensitivity toward people with disabilities has been obtained
OR a Bachelor's degree in Information Technology or Education related field
OR an equivalent combination of post-secondary training, education and/or experience.

Candidates need to demonstrate knowledge, skills and abilities in the following areas:

Computer skills demonstrating proficiency with a range of assistive technology solutions.

Ability to understand and effectively teach adult/senior learners.

Ability to write memos and case notes sufficient to provide clear and concise information.

Ability to express compassion and hope to visually impaired senior customers.

Ability to work independently and make on the spot decisions.

Ability to gather facts, analyze information/situation and recommend solutions to problems with limited scope and complexity.


Preferred Qualifications:



Experience working with persons with visual impairments.
Ability working with seniors.
Knowledge of vision issues.
Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology
Experience with teaching adult learners.
