[Trainer-Talk] Outlook or Gmail, and which Gmail?

Hi Dean,
I don't prefer the Gmail interface over a mail client like Outlook. However, there are a few things that seem to work better, like using advanced search operators, etc. in the Gmail interface.

In my opinion, the Gmail standard view is far superior than the basic html view because of all the features you lose when you use basic html. If you are using the standard view, have Gmail keyboard shortcuts turned on in Gmail settings, and turn off the virtual cursor, standard view can feel a lot more like a client such as Outlook. You can use the up and down arrows to navigate a list of messages and press Enter to open a message. I prefer to turn the virtual cursor back on to read and review messages after opening them. This does feel clunky to have to turn it on and off.

Again, my preference is something like Outlook because it is easy to navigate straight to the text of a message without dealing with multiple cursors, html elements, etc. When I do use the web interface for Gmail, I use the standard view.

I hope this helps. I would be happy to answer any more questions or elaborate further.

Subject: [Trainer-Talk] Outlook or Gmail, and which Gmail?

Hello. I'm an Outlook devotee for mail, and that's what is used in my primary training environment. Now I'm training a business owner used to using the Gmail interface.

Those of you who have explored the Gmail interface, has anybody decided that they prefer it over a desktop e-mail client?

Which of the two presentations, standard or basic HTML View, do you find better? I've been reading about Standard view, and don't find it intuitive for me to learn and teach.

Thoughts appreciated.

Dean
