I usually don’t touch upon virtual ribbons. I just let that check box unchecked in Start Up Wizard while teaching since I find it easier explaining how to navigate with Altt and then Tab downwards and then talk about the keyboard shortcut Alt + Q for the student to find a specific item for Word.

For new and younger students that never really experienced old-school menus, and now everything is expandable tool bars and that type of thing, Traditional menus probably aren’t coming back. So maybe not using the virtual ribbons is better. I just do what works for me. It’s really hard to say.

However, there seems to be a lot of debate on this topic; some sources say it’s a matter of personal preference while others don’t recommend it because it makes things more difficult to find. I am curious to know what everyone’s thoughts are on the virtual ribbon menus option in JAWS. Do you teach both ways and let the student decide what works best or should virtual ribbon menus not be used at all and instead learn to use the standard ribbons?
