[Trainer-Talk] Laptop layout versus desktop layout

I tend to focus on desktop layout because, as Nimer mentioned, it makes very little difference in the beginning and most of the intermediate functions.

Addressing Denise's concern about the modifier key, this can be changed in screen reader settings regardless of which layout is being used.

I always recommend, when possible, the user has a full keyboard on the laptop because, in my experience, the key placement tends to be more consistent in that structure and the additional space allows for more integrated tactile cues.

Whether there is a diffinitive answer to this question (which layout is preferred, should all layouts be taught, etc) I tend to think the person should be familiar with the existence of the layout that is not being directly taught and, as always, have the skills to learn about that layout if the future need arises.

Just my thoughts...

This is a great conversation. The advantage of changing your layout to laptop and if you have a number pad you now have the power of both sets of commands at your fingertips continuously. Both desktop and laptop commands. Then you can decide which set of commands you want to use based on what you’re doing. The biggest advantage of laptop layout also is the caps lock becomes the insert key which makes those commands even faster and more efficient.

Certainly, some screen reader commands are modified, but for navigation and traversal through the OS, browsing, etc., the layout really has negligible impact. It is only really once you start getting to be an intermediate to advanced user that the layout begins to matter. For example, for JAWS and NVDA, the various screen reader modes and cursors have different keyboard commands, and the difference begins to matter a bit there.
