[Trainer-Talk] Remote assistive technology training.

Hi All:

Full disclosure: I met with Chris Murphy yesterday and encouraged him to post this question here. So, if I was a part of this list being used for purposes for which it's not meant, I apologize, both personally and as a division board member. I'll claim ignorance as an excuse and hope the admins will forgive me! 😊

That said, since there seem to be a few folks looking for remote training opportunities, I'll add here as a remote trainer that I think it depends somewhat on what you want to do and who you want to do it with. For example, the majority of my students come from my independent contract with Allied Instructional Services, a company that contracts with school districts in several states to provide a variety of services, including AT instruction, to students in those districts. Some of AIS's contractors work in-person and are limited to a particular "service area," but most are remote because of the multi-state nature of the services we offer. The arrangement between AIS and its contractors, where AIS staff work with the districts behind-the-scenes and place teachers with students, is in my opinion very helpful for remote training, as it allows me to focus on instruction without as much administrative work. However, AIS is somewhat limited in terms of AT training because they work only with K-12 students. If you have experience with students, I would encourage you to look into AIS and check their website frequently; even if there currently isn't an AT placement available, new placements frequently open up. AIS will also be at our national convention as an exhibitor.

If you would prefer to work with adults, I'm finding that some rehab agencies are opening themselves up to remote services. This may be new because of a lack of resources; I recently learned from one such agency I applied for that their state is too big geographically to be covered by the trainers they have, and they are having trouble finding trainers in the areas that need to be covered, so they are now opening opportunities for remote vendors. This opens the door for a remote provider who doesn't live in the state in which he/she would be working. I would encourage anyone looking to investigate this to contact the agency in question and ask if they are open to remote services before proceeding with the application process; I say this from experience in my own state.

On a final side note, I encourage all who are attending the NFB national convention to come to our AT Trainers Division meeting on July 5. If this is a popular enough area of interest, it's likely to come up in the interactive discussion portion. Even if it doesn't, it's a great networking opportunity for all who are interested in training, whether or not they currently work in the field.

Hope this helps.

Chris

Hello. I'm also looking, but I realize that this list isn't really for that. Therefore, can someone recommend a good resource for trainers who are in this or similar situations?

Good morning,

I am wondering if anyone is aware of any remote assistive technology training opportunities? I am looking for remote work teaching assistive technology such as Jaws, iOS Microsoft office computer basics or a combination of these. Please reach out to me off list.

                Kind regards,

                Chris Murphy
