The sleeper rooms aren't that big. There's barely enough room to walk
through them. So, I don't think it would be the kind of place a dog would
want to go.

If you have a sleeper car room, couldn't you have a "training pad" in
a corner where your dog is allowed to go on command, as long as you
pick it up after? I don't have a guide dog yet, so I am not sure
really. Maybe a guide dog user could say whether this would be
possible at all (for those extreme moments only, when the dog is about
to burst of uncomfortableness).
I have enjoyed many trips on Amtrak myself. Yes, sometimes they are
late. It is suggested that you plan for a few extra hours for late
trains and delays at stops. If you are not in a hurry to get where you
are going, or if you are riding just for the pure pleasure of a train
ride, as my grandmother often did, then it will not be a problem.
However, if you have a limited time to get where you are going, don't
expect to be on time unless you gave a few extra hours for delays and
such.
You are welcome to e-mail me personally with any questions you might
have. My boyfriend and I travel by Amtrak at least once a month,
though most rides are within North Carolina.
