[Travelandtourism] $8 for blanket and pillow on American Airline

Hello Cindy and listers,

Either that or they'll look for airline alternatives such as private air
charter. Five years ago this would be beyond the reach of the average flying
passenger but with the advent of air taxi services, very lite jets, and
other developments we're coming in to a time when for what you pay to fly
with one of the big boys you can charter for a bout the same amount although
it can run slightly more depending on the aircraft type, the distance flown,
requested amenities such as in-flight catering, airport landing and ramp
fees etc.
as I just told someone on the phone it could be worth it to spend a few
hundred more to be picked up at your home or business, be taken directly
plane side avoiding the crowded terminals, the embarrassing security checks,
and such. You could step directly from your ground transportation on to the
plane and your baggage is loaded by the flight crew. Soon you're airborne
and on your way. When you land another van is waiting for you and a few
other chapter members to take you to the convention hotel. You and your
belongings are off-loaded and placed on the van and you're soon at the front
door of the Anatole Hilton. The whole procedure would be reversed for the
trip home. I'd be curious to hear from anyone who flew with an air charter
company, and how they as blind passengers were treated by that company.

I agree, Peter. Just checking luggage could cost a couple hundred dollars
for a round trip flight. Passengers will start bringing their own blankets
and pillows and food!

Good evening everyone,

If you asked me the airlines are cutting their own throats. If you have
to take out a mortgage to fly somewhere it's not worth it. Soon it will be
cheaper to charter a jet than to fly on one of the airlines.

DALLAS -- If you want a pillow and blanket in coach on American Airlines,
it's going to cost you.

The airline will charge $8 for a pillow and blanket in coach class for
domestic trips and some international flights longer than two hours,
beginning May 1. The international flights are to and from Canada, Mexico,
Hawaii, the Caribbean and Central America.

Spokeswoman Andrea Huguely said Monday it was an economic decision.

"American evaluates all aspects of the business to ensure that economic
decisions are prudent and strategic for the long-term success of the
company," she said.

Huguely said blankets will remain complimentary in premium-class cabins and
in all cabins for other international flights.

The airline will sell a blue fleece blanket with an inflatable neck pillow
in a clear zippered pouch, and will throw in coupon for $10 off a $30
purchase at Bed, Bath and Beyond, Huguely said.

JetBlue and US Airways charge $7 for a blanket-and-pillow set, with US
Airways adding eye shades and earplugs.

Airlines have steadily added and increased fees for other services such as
checking luggage and buying tickets from a reservation agent since 2008,
first to help cover jet fuel costs, then to offset large losses.

American parent AMR Corp. lost $1.47 billion last year -- and $3.59 billion
in the past two years -- as traffic fell during the recession and
competition limited American's ability to raise fares.
